“Best Choice I’ve made”

My experience as a student with GA was outstanding!

I joined GA for their 12-week software development bootcamp, and it was one of the best choices I’ve ever made. I learned so much in such a short period of time. By the end of the course, I had completed… Read More four projects: one browser game, one front-end app, and two full-stack apps, all of which I was proud to include in my portfolio.
Sam, my instructor at the time, was fantastic—supportive, always ready to help, and willing to answer any concerns we had.
This is a beginner-friendly course, but if you ask me what you should try to learn before starting, I would recommend HTML and CSS. Having some knowledge in these areas will help you have a smoother start. During the course, always take notes and don’t hesitate to ask for help or a second explanation.

Data Analytics (Short Course)

“Great course , helped me land my first data analyst job !”

I approached General Assembly with the goal of switching career into data analytics. I received support from their team to help me understand which course was best suited for my needs, explaining the data analytics space, which hard skills are most in… Read More demand and how their course will help me. I started my course in Nov 2021 and ended in April 2023.

I learnt 3 main areas. Excel, Tableau and SQL. I had no previous experience coding prior to the course. Today in my show SQL is probably the backbone of what I do, and all the skills learnt in the course have 100% been useful and this has allowed me to pursue a career in data analytics.

Throughout the course, which I attended online, we had two assistants and the main instructor. All of them were super helpful and patient when needed. They controlled the group really well, so it really felt like there was a good vibe every time I tuned in to a class. It was also quite cool to have a class from all over the world, I’m based in Europe but we had people in the USA, Singapore and even Australia on the call.

I’d recommend General Assembly for anyone looking to change career. They helped me land a job, change my career, increase my earning potential and honestly I only have good things to say about them

Software Engineering Bootcamp (Full-Time)

“Don’t go here”

Honestly everything you learn here can be learned on Youtube or by starting your own coding projects. I was lucky to get a job and have great teachers for my cohort but it seems like 98% of the students here aren’t finding roles. This is largely due to… Read More the market but it’s also largely due to the deficiencies in their outcomes programs. For example, our `Outcomes` teacher was fired right in the middle of an outcomes class by e-mail. Furthermore, you’re supposed to have lifetime access to their campus, but once you graduate they will start restricting access to parts of the campus that you paid and hide it behind corporate rules and jargon. Don’t waste your money, or if you are planning to waste money on a bootcamp at least go somewhere with a comprehensive and longer curriculum like Turing. From what I hear GA used to be good before it was bought by some 3rd party corporation that only cares about milking students for maximum profit.

“Revealed the possibilities of Software Engineering and navigated through them.”

The projects pushed me to learn and think of terms of development. I learned a lot from others and made many connections. One con is that I wouldve liked to have been pushed more to work through challenges on my own. I am still learning much on my own… Read More and GA’s teaching had helped me hone my self learning.

“Life Changing”

General Assembly’s Software Engineering Immersive (remote) has far exceeded my expectations of what a bootcamp can do for its students. Over the course of 12 weeks, I learned more than I possibly could have imagined on day one with incredible support… Read More from my instructors, TAs, and outcomes coach. These instructors really care about your success and prepare you not just to be a good software engineer, but a great employee who can work independently and actively contribute to a team. Would suggest this bootcamp to anyone interested in coding but would highly recommend you try some coding lessons independently first to make sure this is a field you want to dive into. 10/10 experience, it will forever change my life.

“Poor instruction. Students struggling to get jobs in Software Engineering”

Instructors (HW) are not knowledgable and do not know what the student needs to learn to get a job. The outcomes part 3 weeks with no classes at all. The group morale down for not enough support to get assignments done. The cost of this bootcamp for the… Read More instruction is not worth at all. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOTCAMP TO ANYONE. The staff has not enough experience to handle a large number of students in this cohort.

User Experience Design Immersive

“General Assembly”

I recently graduated from the UX Design immersive at GA. As a career changer who was looking to build my hard skills using tools like Adobe and Figma, I think the bootcamp was a good place to start. If I had one complaint about my specific program it’s… Read More that I wish my instructors would’ve given me more feedback on my designs. I often felt like my designs were good enough to pass the assignments but were never looked at too closely. I wish I would’ve asked for more feedback and I wish the instructors gave me more detailed feedback. When it comes to landing a job after a bootcamp, people don’t tell you that a bootcamp is just not enough anymore. You have to go into this knowing that there is also so much more that you have to do outside of any bootcamp. I have found that a lot of companies are simply not hiring bootcamp graduates so you have to make sure to keep working on projects after you graduate to show you have more experience than just a bootcamp. I would also recommend that you start networking way before. Our career advisers had us networking about halfway through the bootcamp and I think this should’ve been introduced from day 1 and expect it to take way longer to land a job with the current state of the job market.

“An excellent structured approach to learning Web Development and software essentials.”

By attending the bootcamp, I was able to maintain daily structure to learn what I had been dabbling in for months. If I were to go back, I would do the part time program, stretch out the 12 weeks to 6 months or so, which I feel would have allowed me to… Read More explore each subject in more depth. Instead I was somewhat pressed to perform and finish my assignments without further exploration or experimentation because it was due the next day and I had no extra time with family and personal responsibilities. The curriculum was good, we covered the basics, heavy focus on JavaScript, it was enjoyable. I know I’ve only scratched the surface, but now I have legitimate experience and understanding which has provided me a foundation on which to grow my software career.
