“Challenging and Well-Structured”

Bootcamp is challenging and very well-structured. Languages and frameworks highly relevant. A lot of hands-on practice with labs, and projects allowed a ton of creative freedom as to topic and structure, etc. My instructor was extremely good and I felt… Read More I had total support. Job search was challenging just because of market conditions, but that is independent of the bootcamp experience. Flatiron teaches you how to think and solve problems and really equips you with the relevant tools to be a successful software engineer.

“Horrible experience, do not recommend”

So where do I start. I am a former science major who was looking for a career change after realizing that lab work was no longer the road I wanted to travel and decided to leave my comfy position that I had for over 4 years to pursue something that I… Read More always had a strong interest in. It only took about a week for that dream to quickly die and realize that I made a dumb mistake and wish I would have though about my decision more carefully. Needless to say, I feel that I closed a chapter in my life and still want to use my degree to pursue something closely related to my original major. I was extremely excited to start the Flatiron School Full time Online program in September 2023. The best people at the company are those in admissions because they do a really good job at selling you something that turns out to be completely the opposite. When I enrolled for the class, it was underneath the guise that we would be doing a full time lecture with coding projects along the way. However, that turned out to not be the case at all and the only “lecture” that we received was a 1 hour code along in the afternoon. The only other time you have with your instructors is to answer questions from the self-guided online material if you didn’t understand anything. I have no idea how you can market this class as a full time course when you’re literally only teaching for one hour of the day. The reason why people are paying almost $18k (yes, it’s that much) is so they can be lead by a teacher and so that knowledge gets passed down. If I wanted to grind material on slides, I would’ve just used freecodecamp or literally any alternative that doesn’t cost nearly as much and actually gives you advice on how to write the code. The fact that something that is free can give you more advice that a program that cost almost one year of school is pretty sad. Speaking about instructors, the instructor himself was laughable at best. He literally did not have any teaching background prior to Flatiron School, and it was very apparent because even though he knew the material himself, he did not do a great job explaining and going into great detail about the subject matter. As a matter of fact, he was a previous student through the school, which makes me wonder if they literally just hire instructors from their student pool and not consider anyone who has a full CS background. I feel that most people that join this course are those who have no idea how to do code to begin with, and in order to keep you students engaged you really need to go the extra mile to help those that are struggling. Even after completing the pre-course material, I was still completely lost in the lectures because he would just plow through. I learned more from other students with more hands on experience than I did from the instructor, which really says something about the people that they choose to teach this course. The only thing positive I can say about the course is that there were legitimately a lot of good people who made a discord group for our cohort and had chatrooms to help those in need. They were very knowledgeable about the topic and honestly, I wish the best for them. They made the experience a lot better and hope they land a good position in the future, because they deserved it. The fact that other cohorts were more instructive than the “instructor” was my red flag, and I knew that it was time to get my money back and go look for a new position. So, to sum it up – Full-Time online is not really “full time” – Lackluster material which you can find online for free – Bad instructors (one of them literally did not even start the week I was there) – Admissions will lure you in for a class you thought was completely different in reality – Expensive! – Other cohorts will probably be better teachers than your own instructor Seriously, do your research. Sure there may be a lot of good reviews but there are also plenty of bad ones as well. I wouldn’t be shocked if most of the reviews that are overly positive are those still relying on thee school to find a good placement or alumni that got hired by the school. Do yourselves a favor and avoid the same mistake I made.

“Part-time flex program”

I enrolled in a part-time data science bootcamp and had high hopes for the course. However, my experience left much to be desired. The curriculum primarily consisted of reading materials with limited opportunities for practical application. This approach… Read More made it challenging to grasp the subject matter fully, as it relied heavily on prior knowledge and context. If you’re new to data science and coding, this bootcamp may not be the best choice for you. It lacked the depth and hands-on experience needed to truly learn and apply data science concepts effectively. Additionally, I found that most of the course content could be easily found online for free, which made the hefty $16,900 price tag difficult to justify. In summary, while this bootcamp might benefit those with a solid foundation in data science, it falls short for beginners looking for a comprehensive and interactive learning experience. Consider exploring other, more cost-effective options before investing in this program

“Great school”

It’s a good place to study..the instructors are industry experts and take their time to explain the nitty gritty of the courses. I would recommend for anyone seeking to break into tech or switch profession. The syllabus is also well crafted and very well… Read More outlined.

“Waste of time. They want your money.”

I found my therapist through Flatiron. That’s the only positive I have from them. If you disregard my warning then you’re gonna need a good therapist like I got. Their success rates apply to NY or CO hires. If you plan to work elsewhere in the country… Read More it’s going to be next to impossible to get support from this dump. So… I stuck it out after my 2nd instructor quit mid-way through the 15 weeks. She complained about her treatment at Flatiron to multiple students. The subsequent teachers were doing their best – I guess. One of my scheduled meetings with their permanent replacement took place while he was picking up his child from school. Or that’s what I just have to believe. He later turned one of our scheduled one-on-one meetings into an opportunity to complain about other students! That didn’t help debug issues with my project. Use other sources online to learn how to code. The Odin Project. Freecodecamp. If you Google those and buddy up with people in their discord servers then you’ll save money and be just as hireable as the folks who were cheating on code challenges. The same folks were quite simply pushed through to graduation (incomplete project? no problem – here’s a certificate of completion). After that, you may then get badgered by a career coach who doesn’t actively help. In my case, I was advised to turn down roles because it would drag down the school’s average starting income. Resumes are not my strong point. I write code – not blurbs about my achievements. A friend of mine is stepping in to edit my resume – not the career coach I’m paying for. The career coach is there to keep Flatiron off the hook for liability and appearances only. I can go on but it gets upsetting thinking about how naive and trusting I was to a for-profit NY-based joke of an institution. It’s a shame they didn’t go down with WeWork.

“The worst place ever”

If you are working full time and looking for a supportive Bootcamp with teachers that actually help and care than this is the wrong place to be. I took part time software engineer program as I am full time employee and trying to get to the IT a bit faster… Read More than through regular school. At the beginning we had a great teacher Chat, he took his time with explanations and I did okay in this program. But it lasted for a several months because they changed teacher and then they changed the second teacher as well. That’s when everything went down. The last teacher we had didn’t even respond to my text messages. I had to send it several times in order for her to respond. I mean this part time program is great when you don’t have extra hours and you are good on your own learning but when it gets to questions regarding lessons you want do very well. It doesn’t worse 15,000!!!!! Now I don’t have a Diploma but I am stuck with loan for 15,000 that no one wants to return! Good luck!

“Empowering and Life-Changing”

After teaching math for 20 years, I decided that I was ready for something new (data science) and as a midlife career-changer, the efficiency of a bootcamp appealed to me. After looking into several programs and talking with others who had completed bootcamps,… Read More I decided on Flatiron School. From my very first information-gathering call over two years ago to my exit interview last week, it was a great experience at every step. The entire process was well-organized and communicated, the curriculum is detailed, carefully laid out and is updated routinely. The rigorous projects are designed to encourage students to dig into their interests and allow plenty of room for exploring new methods or concepts. My instructor was amazing and gave me the perfect blend of encouragement and challenge. I went from having major imposter syndrome to confidently tackling data science interviews (and landing a great job!) in just a few short months. As with any program, you get out what you put into it. Since I did not have a technical or coding background, I learned Python and SQL on my own before the program and gained some familiarity with machine learning. This really helped me get the most out of the program because I was able to go further than a cursory understanding of the concepts. Bootcamps move quickly and so it is critical to have the discipline and time-management skills to keep up and the motivation to do some deeper exploration of concepts on your own. It’s hard work, but it’s worth it. I absolutely loved my Flatiron experience and my only regret is that I didn’t so it sooner.

“The Flatiron Software Engineering program was an incredible experience.”

This was an incredibly challenging program. Pros: this program has everything you need to land an entry level Software Engineering role. Cons: the material is challenging and there is a lot you must learn to make it through the program. My advice is to… Read More be prepared! The better prepared you are before starting the program, the better your chances of making it through. Two things I wish I’d learned before starting the program to better prepare myself for the rigor of going through the modules. First have a thorough basic understanding of html, css, ruby, and javascript. These are mandatory! Also a basic understanding of rails is also suggested. These are the basic building blocks of the program that are used to build complex applications. Second understand how to use pry, console log, and debugger. Rails uses binding pry and javascript uses console log and debugger. These are the tools programmers use to debug their code. A doctor may have to conduct exploratory surgery to determine the cause of an ailment and a mechanic will have to look under the hood to figure out what’s wrong with a vehicle. Programmers use debugging tools to see what’s going on in their code to determine what the problem is so they can code the solution. Learning how to debug your code is a must to become proficient/expert at programming. The program was challenging but your preparation and persistent hard work will lead to your success.
